Sharing knowledge and providing an arena for electric mobility internationally

The GREAT Action - Green Regions with Alternative fuels for Transport – was initiated to put words into action in the political strategy for STRING from November 2013: "Green Growth in STRING". The GREAT Action will make the transport corridor between Oslo and Hamburg one of the first to meet the EU alternative fuels directive.

The Action will contribute to decarbonisation of the transport sector, and therefore has the potential to make the corridor an EU best-practice example on how to meet environmental and climate challenges. The unique combination of regional public authorities and private companies working together creates opportunities for new and dynamic developments. The Capital Region of Denmark, represented by Copenhagen Electric, is responsible for the policy-measures activity. The objective of this activity is to assess the situation and define what policy measures work in order to enhance the alternative fuels market.

The Action takes a holistic approach that promotes all kinds of alternative fuels for road transport. The overall goal is to reduce fossil emissions by establishing a stronger market demand for alternative-fuel transport solutions by ensuring access to supply over the long distances between metropolises in northern Europe.

The successful introduction of cleaner transportation solutions on a large scale remains critical to the current EU goals to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and their effect on the environment

The GREAT project includes:

  • Installation of 70 triple standard quick chargers and 3 LNG/CNG stations, combined with a comprehensive approach towards business models and policy measures.
  • Communication to the market and end-users.
  • Based on installed quick chargers and LNG fuelling stations, the GREAT project will develop business models and policy measures to support all alternative fuels.

The total budget for GREAT is more than DKK 100 mill. with DKK 52 mill from the EU CEF – Connecting Europe Facility programme. The Action will contribute to implementation of the EU Core Network, with focus on the northern parts of Scandinavian – Mediterranean Corridor.

International activities
The purpose of Copenhagen Electric is to promote market uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). Denmark, and especially the Capital Region, is among the leading EV regions in the world. The large deployment of charging infrastructure makes it a unique testbed and hoop for deployment of an EV market. Copenhagen Electric takes part in international information sharing, policy direction discussions, and future strategies for leading countries in electric mobility deployment in order to support ongoing efforts in the decarbonisation of the transport sector.

Copenhagen Electric has been selected as an expert member of a sub-group in the Sustainable Transport Forum (STF) to foster creation of an electro-mobility market for services. The STF is a group of experts from authorities in EU Member States, public and private organisations, as well as individual experts with relevant expertise in the field of alternative transport fuels. Its aim is to assist in implementing the Union’s activities to foster the deployment of alternative fuels.

The STF also aims at providing assistance to the European Commission in application of Directive 2014/94/EU. Electro-mobility is one of the power sources identified in the Clean Power for Transport Package. Its specificity, especially for road transport, requires it to be addressed properly, taking into account all the potential drivers and barriers that can push or hinder its deployment in Europe.

In January 2016 the Capital Region of Denmark signed the declaration to scale-up smart electromobility solutions in Europe as part of our membership of EV4SCC – Electric Vehicles for Smart Cities and Communities.

EV4SCC is a collaborative platform which aims to mobilise a Europe-wide dialogue on the potential for EVs to be integrated with smart city initiatives. Its activities are mainly dedicated to promoting EVs in Smart Cities and including the exchange of knowledge and best practice to support the ongoing efforts of partners to advancing innovative solutions for electric mobility, and smart cities and communities.

By coming together, we declare our willingness to accelerate the deployment of electromobility solutions by supporting cities and regions to adopt such solutions at scale in key market segments such as:

  • Intelligent management of public and private fleets of electric vehicles
  • Smart urban logistics with light electric vehicles
  • Smart electrification of public transport
  • Innovative integrated infrastructure solutions
  • Smart electromobility solutions that serve multi-modal mobility services
