Mineral and raw material resources supply in the Capital Region of Denmark

Mineral and raw material resources such as sand, stone, gravel, clay and limestone are extracted in the Capital Region of Denmark.
Only sand, gravel, stone, clay and limestone are currently being extracted in the Capital Region of Denmark. Extraction of sand, stone and gravel can take place within the designated extraction areas. Extraction of clay can be undertaken at a number of smaller sites where there are special rights for extraction.

Due to the geological conditions and the high population density in the Capital Region of Denmark, it is not possible to extract the quantity or quality of mineral resources that is needed in the region for road building and the expansion of towns etc.

It is therefore necessary to transport mineral and raw material resources from Region Zealand and from the seabed around Denmark to the Capital Region of Denmark. Materials from the seabed are transported to the ports of Avedøre, Gilleleje and Copenhagen. Additionally, some mineral and raw material resources are imported from abroad, mostly granite and quarry materials from Norway and Sweden.

Extraction of mineral and raw material resources in the Capital Region of Denmark

The extraction of mineral and raw material resources can vary from year to year and it is heavily influenced by factors such as construction activity and infrastructure projects - such as building roads and railways.

Only part of the total resource has the quality demanded by the users, for example, the Danish Road Directorate. Based on current knowledge and the known consumption of sand, gravel and stone, the region estimates that there are insufficient quantities of mineral and raw material resources in the Capital Region of Denmark to cover demands.

The quality of known deposits indicates that there will be a large net import of mineral and raw material resources to the region to ensure the continued growth of the region.
