Do you have research with commercial potential? Are you interested in Start-Ups?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, the BioInnovation Institute (BII) could be a valuable funding partner for advancing your work.

International Life Science incubator with tailored programmes

Thie BioInnovation Institute (BII) is an international life science incubator  established in 2018 with support from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Its primary mission is to help bring life science research to market by supporting early-stage innovation and entrepreneurship.

BII offers three distinct programmes, each designed for different stages of research and commercialization: 'Bio Studio', 'Venture Lab', and 'Creation House'. The most suitable programme depends on the maturity of your research and whether a company has already been established.

Where to get support

Researchers working in the Capital Region of Denmark can expert support from the Region's Funding and Business Development team when preparing applications for 'Bio Studio' and 'Venture Lab' programmes. Please note: Support for 'Venture Lab' applications is only available if a company has not yet been established, as the Strategic Research Support and Outreach-team only assists researchers—not registered companies—with funding applications.

The Bio Studio Program

The Bio Studio Program supports experienced researchers in advancing innovative research ideas into commercially viable products and solutions, with a strong focus on translational projects that address global health challenges.

  • The Bio Studio Program is a 3-year program with funding up to DKK 15 million (DKK 5 million annually).
  • The program aims to establish a 'spin-out' company capable of attracting significant commercial investment (e.g., seed or series A financing) by the end of the project period.
  • The terms for the commercialization of the company's results have already been negotiated between BII and the Capital Region of Denmark.
  • The Bio Studio Program offers access to laboratories and office spaces, business development support, patenting support in collaboration with the Tech Trans office, and a strong network of investors through  BII.

The application process begins with submitting an expression of interest directly to BII. Researchers in the Capital Region of Denmark interested in applying should contact the regional coordinator for guidance and support. While Nina Heede Ulrich is currently on leave, the role is temporarily being handled by Maj Britt Larsen, who can assist with initiating contact with BII and preparing your application.

Venture lab

Venture Lab is a program designed for newly established companies, including start-ups and spin-outs. The grant is awarded to the company participating in the program; the company may be formally established after the grant is secured, meaning incorporation is not a prerequisite at the time of application.

  • Evidence-based research idea (proof of principle).
  • 1-year project period.
  • The grant is a convertible loan of up to DKK 4 million.
  • BII provides laboratories and office spaces.

If the project involves intellectual property rights held by hospitals within the Capital Region of Denmark, the region’s Technology Transfer Office must be involved in the application process.

Do you have clarity on the rights to your invention?

All applications to BII programs must involve the Capital Region of Denmark’s Technology Transfer Office (Tech Trans). The Tech Trans office supports researchers in evaluating the commercial potential of their inventions and provides guidance on patenting and intellectual property protection.

If you intend to establish a company based on intellectual property owned by one of the region’s hospitals, you are required to enter into a formal agreement with the Tech Trans office.

If you have questions for the Tech Trans office, you can contact them via email.
