National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The NIH invests over DKK 200 billion annually in health-related research and development. Danish researchers are eligible to apply for these funds.
NIH comprises multiple institutes and centers, offering opportunities to apply for substantial, long-term individual research projects. Most NIH calls for proposals have three annual deadlines. If an application is unsuccessful, resubmission is often possible.
When applying for NIH funding, it is crucial that your project addresses a research gap that American institutions are unable to fill. We also strongly recommend involving a U.S.-based partner in your project.
Guidance on NIH Applications
If you intend to apply for NIH funding, you must involve the Research Support and Outreach Team at the Unit for Research Support and -economy. Unlike Danish and European funding schemes, NIH applications must be submitted by the Capital Region of Denmark as the official applicant—not the individual researcher.
Our team provides comprehensive support throughout the application process, including:
- Identifying suitable funding opportunities
- Advising on consortium composition
- Planning the application timeline
- Assisting with budgeting
To initiate the process, please complete the NIH approval form and submit it to Research Support and Outreach-team. This ensures the best possible foundation for your application. If your application is successful, the Legal Unit will assist with contract negotiations and financial reporting.
You may also apply for preparatory funding through the Capital Region of Denmark's PIF pool (link opens in a new tab; Info in Danish).
Administrative Information
If you are considering applying to any American funding program, we recommend contacting us well in advance. Different programs have varying requirements regarding the registration and eligibility of the Capital Region of Denmark. By involving the team early, we can help prevent administrative errors that could lead to application rejection.
For NIH and other U.S. foundations, specific institutional information must be included in your application. Please ensure you use the correct and current details:
UEI: C1LQEZ7283D5
EIN: 44-4444444
Legal name: Region Hovedstaden
If you are unsure or need additional information, please contact the Research Support and Outreach Team.
Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) Policy
As part of the NIH application process—and during the grant period—you must confirm that the Capital Region of Denmark has an FCOI policy in place. Detailed information about the region’s FCOI policy is available in the info box to the right.
Please note: NIH requires that all researchers complete FCOI training before initiating any funded project.
eRA Commons
eRA Commons is a U.S. registration system used for various administrative purposes, including application submission and access to specific datasets.
If you need to register in eRA Commons, please contact the Research Support and Outreach Team. Affiliation with the Capital Region of Denmark in eRA Commons must be coordinated through the team.
