A great cycling region
Cycling offers many benefits for the individual as well as for the society. For the individual, cycling is healthy, flexible and fast. For society, a large number of cyclists primarily means more efficient traffic movement, reduced congestion and pollution, as well as societal health benefits as a result of increased exercise.
According to statistics 18 % of all transportation was by bike in 2022 and 33 % of all commuting in the Capital Region of Denmark is already done by bike. The ambition is to improve the conditions for bicycles even more through planning and infrastructure projects with an increased number of cycling citizens as outcome.
Cycle superhighways
'The cycle superhighways' is a cooperation between the Capital Region of Denmark and 29 municipalities. The partnership collaborates to create a network of cycle superhighways across municipality boarders to provide better conditions for especially cycling commuters and make the bicycle a competetive alternative to excisting car commuters.
Cycle superhighways connect work, study and residential areas and they are planned to run near train stations making it easy to combine a commute with public transport. Crucial amenities are available for the commuter such as air pumps, safer intersections, traffic lights timed to average cycling speed – as well as clear signage at roadsigns and directly at the tracks.
The ambition is to establish +60 routes in the region of Copenhagen with a length of more than 850 kilometres of cycle superhighway. Bike commuters already (by 2023) have access to 16 cycle superhighways.
