The Lighthouse Consortium on Obesity Management (LightCOM) combines expertise from leading research environments in Denmark and the United Kingdom, with the vision of providing a strong evidence-based foundation for obesity management in the future. The overall vision of LightCOM is to improve health and quality of life for people living with obesity through solutions that can contribute to lasting changes, including long-term weight loss.

LightCOM aims to develop, test and evaluate new obesity management programmes. We will compare a programme delivering a personalised intensive weight loss intervention with existing obesity management strategies in randomised controlled trials carried out in primary and secondary care in the two countries. Read more about the IWL here

Furthermore, a novel obesity management programme addressing healthy living and weight stigma without focussing on weight loss will be developed, and its feasibility will be tested in primary care in Denmark. Read more about the weight-neutral approach here

A cornerstone of LightCOM is the pragmatic nature of the trials. Thus, the interventions and the evidence generated is designed for broad roll-out. The project involves existing healthcare providers at all levels: Public and private primary care healthcare providers; municipalities and local health boards; general practitioners and hospitals, which will be actively involved in testing the interventions across the healthcare system in both Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Funding

The LightCOM project is supported by a DKK 179,788,407 grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (Grant number: NNF22SA0080921). The project started on 1 January 2023 and will run until 31 December 2028.

National context

LightCOM is part of the Danish Lighthouse Life Science - Healthy Weight initiative, linking public and private actors in Denmark's Capital Region in a common effort to develop new health solutions within life science and welfare technology that can prevent, detect, and manage severe obesity. With its focus on treatment options for people living with obesity, LightCOM complements the other projects in the Danish Lighthouse Life Science - Healthy Weight initiative.
