The election is held at the same time and place as the municipal elections. Voting begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m. when no more voters turn up to vote.
There are 47 members to be elected to the Regional Council for 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2029.
Who can vote?
Everyone who is 18 years of age or older on election day and has permanent residence in the Region of Eastern Denmark (Zealand, including Bornholm and the islands) has the right to vote for the Regional Council.
Furthermore, you must fulfil one of the following conditions:
- Have Danish citizenship, or
- Be a national of one of the other Member States of the European Union, or
- Be a citizen of Iceland, Norway or the United Kingdom, or
- Have had permanent residence in the kingdom (Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands) without interruption for the last four years before election day.
In addition, persons who have reached the age of 18 on election day who are citizens of one of the other Member States of the European Union and are registered in the protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are entitled to vote for the Regional Council.
The following people do not have the right to vote in the Regional Council elections
- Foreign nationals with exceptional leave to remain
- Foreign nationals sentenced to deportation
- Administratively expelled foreign nationals
- Foreign nationals staying in Denmark to serve a sentence imposed by an international court
How do you stand for election?
Anyone who is entitled to vote in the Regional Council elections in the Region of Eastern Denmark can stand as a candidate for the Regional Council elections in the Region of Eastern Denmark.
To stand for election, you fill out and submit a special candidate list form approved by the Ministry of the Interior and Health.
The form can be ordered or picked up at Regionshuset in Sorø or Regionsgården in Hillerød. Please see the contact info at the bottom of this page.
Deadlines for submitting candidate lists
Tuesday 2 September 2025 and until Tuesday 16 September 2025 at 12 noon.
During this period, lists of candidates who stood in the last Regional Council election for the Capital Region of Denmark or Region Zealand, who were elected to one of the Regional Councils, and who on Tuesday 16 September 2025, are still represented in the Regional Council in question, can submit a list of candidates to the Region of Eastern Denmark with a request for exemption of signatures of nominators.
The deadline cannot be deviated from.
Tuesday 16 September 2025 and until Tuesday 30 September 2025 at 12 noon.
During this period, lists of candidates who stood in the last Regional Council election for the Capital Region of Denmark or Region Zealand, who were not elected to one of the Regional Councils, or who are still not represented in the Regional Council in question, can submit a list of candidates to the Region of Eastern Denmark. The candidate list must be signed by a minimum of 400 and a maximum of 600 signatories.
The deadline cannot be deviated from.
Notification of an electoral alliance
You can enter into an electoral alliance by filling out and submitting a special electoral alliance form approved by the Ministry of the Interior and Health. All candidate lists in the same electoral alliance must fill out a similar form.

Deadline for registering an electoral alliance
Monday 6 October 2025 at 12 noon.

Where to submit candidate lists
Candidate lists must be submitted in person at Regionshuset, Alleen 15, 4180 Sorø.
Candidate lists cannot be submitted at Regionsgården in Hillerød.
