A new region, a new Regional Council and entirely new Health Councils also mean new politicians and positions for the politicians and parties that 67.9% of eligible voters chose at the ballot box on 18 November.
With the inaugural Regional Council meeting on 2 December, it has now been formally decided who will lead and sit on the Regional Council, the Executive Committee and the six new Health Councils in the Region of Eastern Denmark.
“I am proud and humbled to have been elected as the new Regional Council Chairman in the Region of Eastern Denmark, where we will make history together in the coming time. We are forming a new region while implementing the most significant healthcare reform in almost 20 years".
"Politically, we want to continue and develop the excellent healthcare we have today with patients’ needs in mind. We want to ensure equality in health so that citizens throughout the region, regardless of geography and social conditions, have equal access to healthcare services and more uniform medical coverage,” says Lars Gaardhøj (Social Democrats), Chairman of the Regional Council of the Region of Eastern Denmark.
The direction of the new region began the morning after the regional elections, when six parties signed a constitutional agreement and appointed Lars Gaardhøj as Regional Council Chairman. Together with 1st Deputy Chairman Christoffer Buster Reinhardt (Conservative People’s Party) and 2nd Deputy Chairwoman Camilla Hove Lund (Denmark’s Liberal Party), they form the Chairship of the Region of Eastern Denmark.
Collaboration on community healthcare and psychiatry
The new region will have six new Health Councils. They are new political bodies in which both the region and the municipalities are represented to ensure close collaboration, political anchoring, and a common ambition for community healthcare services within the geography of each Health Council.
“We need the same high quality throughout the region, but the solutions don’t have to be the same. Hørsholm Municipality and Holbæk Municipality are not the same, which is why the right solutions must be found locally in the Health Councils".
"Together with the municipalities, we will look at the overall healthcare tasks for which we are each responsible, so that we can jointly find the best ways to help citizens,” says 1st Deputy Chairman Christoffer Buster Reinhardt, who emphasises that there must also be intense focus on reducing treatment waiting times.
“One of the areas we are particularly interested in is psychiatry. This area has been underprioritised for many years, but with the health reform, the Region of Eastern Denmark and the Health Councils have an opportunity to strengthen joint efforts for people with mental health problems. We want to ensure faster and more coherent help, especially for children and young people. They should not be left in the lurch, which is why we need to strengthen our offer to them,” says 2nd Deputy Chairwoman Camilla Hove Lund.
In 2026, the political committees in the Region of Eastern Denmark are so-called preparatory committees. This is because the Region of Eastern Denmark as an organisation will not be established until 1 January 2027. Until then, the Capital Region of Denmark and Region Zealand are still responsible for running the two regions’ hospitals, among other things, and the current Regional Councils will continue in the 2026 transition year.
