Hard-of-hearing patients require a modern setting and relocation to Glostrup

On Tuesday, the Regional Council approved a proposal to move hard-of-hearing patients from Bispebjerg Hospital to Rigshospitalet Glostrup. The matter has been sent for consultation.

Outdated audiometric booths are set to be modernised if the proposal to move the treatment of hard-of-hearing patients from Rigshospitalet’s outpatient department at Bispebjerg Hospital to Rigshospitalet Glostrup is implemented. Yesterday, the Regional Council approved the proposal, which is in consultation until 5 August.

“Both patients and staff will get a much-needed upgrade of the physical environment at the Glostrup site, including modern audiometric booths. We are getting older, and more people require hearing aid treatment, and the Glostrup matrix presents good opportunities to accommodate this development.

At the same time, a location in Glostrup gives hard-of-hearing patients from the entire future Region of Eastern Denmark an excellent opportunity to use the modern facilities,” says Regional Council Chairman Lars Gaardhøj (Social Democratic Party).

If the move goes ahead, hearing care will continue at Nordsjællands Hospital and Rigshospitalet Blegdamsvej.

Facts - patient relocation

  • In 2024, the audiology department at Bispebjerg Hospital had 5,668 unique patients. Patients typically have two to three visits for the initial hearing aid to be dispensed, followed by a repeat dispensing of a new hearing aid every four years. There are currently 41 employees working in the audiology department at Bispebjerg Hospital.

Physical conditions and schedule for relocating

  • There is a vacant area of 1,500 m² in two connected wards at the Glostrup site that was previously used for medical patients, who were relocated to Hvidovre Hospital in 2023.

  • The total establishment costs are estimated at DKK 50 million, including the purchase and installation of soundproof booths and ventilation systems for the earplug laboratory, etc. The money is reserved in the second economy report.

  • According to the current schedule, the premises are expected to be ready to occupy by mid-2027.

  • The proposal is in consultation until 5 August 2025. Relocation of the audiology function will be processed as an amendment to the current Hospital Plan 2025
