Until now, the Region’s policy has been that no investments should be made in companies that manufacture weapons. This has now changed following a proposal from Region Councillor Line Ervolder (Conservative People’s Party).
“We are in a new world situation where the war in Ukraine is raging, and where the Untied State’s continued support for Ukraine’s military is being seriously questioned. As a result, almost every European country has decided to heavily invest in weapons and military equipment. And I think it’s common sense that we adapt our investment policy to match current developments in the world,” says Line Ervolder.
The Region mainly invests in Danish government and mortgage bonds but has invested DKK 250 million in corporate bonds via investment funds. The Region does not invest in individual shares.
Investments in corporate bonds are made by external asset managers investing according to the Region’s financial guidelines.
No investment in nuclear weapons
Denmark has adopted a number of UN conventions that prohibit the use of nuclear weapons and other controversial weapons. Therefore, the Capital Region of Denmark’s updated investment policy still implies that the Region may only invest in companies that comply with the conventions. This means that the Region’s asset manager is still not allowed to invest in companies that manufacture nuclear or chemical weapons.
