Lærke Bing Røikjer

PhD Student, MSc in Medical Anthropology
Associated with UCSF since 2026 | lbing@health.sdu.dk / laerke.bing.roeikjer@regionh.dk

Educational background: MSc in Medical Anthropology and PhD student. Research methods: I work with ethnographic and qualitative methods and have strong experience with interviews (both individual and focus group interviews) as well as participant observation.

Research interests: I am deeply interested in how illness affects lived life. In particular, I have focused on how young adults navigate life with cancer and am currently affiliated with a project investigating diagnostic delay within this group. In previous projects, I have also had a strong focus on kinship, belonging, relationality, care, and understandings of the self in relation to a cancer diagnosis.

Projects: I am currently the project leader of a study examining how young people with cancer experience the time leading up to their diagnosis, with the aim of uncovering why diagnostic delay constitutes a particular challenge for this patient group. I am also in the final stages of my PhD, in which I investigate how young people with cancer navigate and negotiate caregiving responsibilities with friends and family. Here, I focus on what care truly is and how it influences and shapes relationships.

Collaborators/networks: I am affiliated with the research group FOKUS (Research and Knowledge Unit for Cancer and Young Adult Health) and also work closely with hospitals, the patient organization Ung Kræft, the Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse), and Danish Regions. In connection with my PhD, I am also affiliated with the Research Unit for General Practice at the University of Southern Denmark.
