Body & Cancer

Body & Cancer is an exercise programme targeting cancer patients in chemotherapy. The programme is based on a ​​health care focused and interdisciplinary research effort at UCSF and it is offered throughout the whole year in the Capital Region.
Body & Cancer started out as a research project back in 2001, and has gone through three phases of research and was finished with a randomized controlled experiment. The research project showed that the exercise programme Body & Cancer reduces fatigue, improves physical capacity and hightens the level of energy of cancer patients in chemotherapy. Ever since 2007, Body & Cancer has men implementated as a permanent exercise programme in the Capital Region.

More than 2000 cancer patients have participated in Body & Cancer, which consists of massage and exercise that improve strength, relaxation and body awareness. The workout takes place nine hours a week for six weeks and participants are divided into groups of 14-16 people. In order to participate in Body & Cancer, you must be at least 18 years old and be receiving chemotherapy at Rigshospitalet or another hospital in the Capital Region. The workout is located at training facilities at Ryesgade 27, the yellow house in the back, 2200 Copenhagen N.

Body & Cancer can also be found at other hospitals in Denmark, all of them ​following the template created and researched by UCSF in Rigshospitalet. The said other hospitals are: Aalborg University Hospital, Aarhus University Hospital​, Herning Regional Hospital, Vejle Hospital, Sydvestjysk Hospital in Esbjerg, Odense University Hospital, Hopsital Sønderjylland, Sønderborg, Herlev-Gentofte Hospital and Hospital of Bornholm.

Professionals, teachers and people responsible associated with the Body & Cancer team are: Christian Lillelund, physiotherapist/human physiologist; Jette Brabrand, nurse; Birgitte Rasmussen, nurse; Kira Bloomquist, physiotherapist/PhD; Sanne Eltang Høgh, exercise physiologist; Christina Andersen, nurse/PhD/daily leader.
