Kirstine Roll Vestergaard

PhD student, Medical doctor
Associated with UCSF since 2024 | kirstine.roll.vestergaard@regionh.dk

Educational background as a medical doctor from the University of Copenhagen with clinical experience from somatics, psychiatry and quantitative research experience from medical wards. Research focus areas include adolescent mental health, self- injury, socio-cultural dimensions of psychiatric symptoms, and interactions between societal expectations and adolescent well-being.
I am currently working on an interdisciplinary PhD project on poor mental health and self-injury. One in five Danish youth in 9th grade report experience with self-harm, regardless of psychiatric diagnosis. With the increasing prevalence of psychological distress and self-injury, the phenomenon can no longer be understood solely as an individual symptom, but must be seen as a growing public health issue. Increased pressure to perform, societal demands and the psychologisation of language and self-understanding may play a central role in young people's mental health.
The project uses an interdisciplinary approach, combining qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups with an analytical framework that integrates sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of how young people navigate complex social conditions and cope with them. The project will contribute with knowledge that can support the development of future interven-tions and a broader societal debate on youth mental health.
